Near Coastal Adventure on Arabella
August 16-18, 2024
Manhattan Sailing School occasionally offers opportunities for graduates to discover the adventure of long distance cruising, and experience standing watch, navigating and studying the weather. This trip is called the “Near Coastal Adventure.”
We sail onboard Manhattan Yacht Club’s flagship “Arabella” as she travels between two ports on the East Coast. Our students have a unique and incredible opportunity to join aboard. The participation fee for this adventure is $890 per person.
This is a major experience for most sailors and a great step towards the “Ocean Adventure.”
Arabella is a beautiful 157 foot mega yacht with 3 masts. Her sail plan includes a mizzen, genoas, staysails and fishermen. Arabella is a sturdy long distance traveler and has completed dozens of coastal and ocean voyages. You will be gaining valuable experience while still in the safety and comfort of a large yacht.
In 2024, the Near Coastal Adventure will be a trip from Maine to Newport RI. This voyage will be approximately 350 nautical miles. The duration of the trip will depend on wind and weather. Three days are budgeted and the trip could be completed in as few as two days. Most of the trip will take place within sight of land.
This Near Coastal Adventure is an excellent introduction to the world of long-distance cruising. It will help prepare you for an ocean passage such as New York to Bermuda, or Bermuda to the British Virgin Islands. This course is open to all graduates of Manhattan Sailing School, as well as Members of the Manhattan Yacht Club.

The adventure begins on Friday morning and should end by Sunday afternoon. Food and a cabin and bedding will be provided during the adventure. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the start and finish.
“If you have ever wanted to understand what sailing is about, this is the trip for you. In a very protective way, Arabella exposes you to the thrill of going to sea and accomplishing something very few people ever get the chance to truly experience!!” – Scott Crow
It is recommend that students bring a set of foul weather gear for this adventure as well as handheld VHF radio. This gear as well as many other sailing items can be acquired at West Marine. https://www.westmarine.com/
To follow along the trip and assist with navigation, it is recommended that students download the Navionics app onto their smart phones https://www.navionics.com/usa/apps/navionics-boating?gclsrc=aw.ds. During the trip, you will be able to see where you are at any time, observe your current speed over ground, plot way points, and estimate times to arrive at various points.
The start of this trip is weather dependent and the departure day can be pushed back from 1 to 3 days depending on weather. You can see the latest near coastal weather predictions at https://www.passageweather.com/
