The Yacht – Basic Coastal Cruising is taught on a sleek and fast J/105 named “Gratitude.” This sloop is equipped with a roller furling jib, a large mainsail and a sexy steering wheel. She is a big step up in performance and excitement from the J/24 which we use for Basic Sailing.
J/105s were introduced as a racing class for teams up to 6 or 7 people. They perform exceptionally well and you will be able to chase down and pass most other sailboats in the harbor.
And when you start sailing on larger boats like the J/105, you also have to get versed in maritime etiquette such as flying the ensign while you are underway! Be sure to take it back down again by sunset.
Schedule – Basic Coastal Cruising is offered on two schedules. You can pick the course which fits your schedule and excites you most.
Sat & Sun – Cruise Around the Harbor – The first is a full weekend course taught from 10 am to 6 pm. This schedule starts and ends each day from our home at the Manhattan Yacht Club in Jersey City. You will sleep in your own bed and do not have to book any hotel rooms. The goal of this course is stretch our legs as much as possible within the harbor. If conditions permits, you will sail down the harbor and out under the Verrazano Narrow Bridge. Of you could go up north and sail under the George Washington Bridge. The direction you take will depend on the winds and currents each day.
Mon & Tues – The Overnight Adventure! – For the more adventurous sailors, we offer Basic Coastal Cruising on a Monday & Tuesday where you will depart the harbor and sail down to the Sandy Hook area before returning the next day. This is a 20 nautical mile trip, full of interesting sights, giving you a taste of the ocean and the cooling sea breezes. You will sail down through the Lower Bay of New York Harbor, pass Romer Shoals and inside of Sandy Hook to the Atlantic Highlands area. Gratitude will dock for the night and students will put her away before heading to one of the festive dining locations in this waterfront community. Nothing tastes better than a cold drink after a long and exciting day of sailing on the water. At night, you will stay in a local hotel or AirBnb before boarding the boat again on Tuesday morning (the Sandy Hook area is a very popular summer location which means the hotels are always filled on weekends – this is why we can only offer this trip during the week).
Class Size – Each course is limited to 6 students (a minimum of 4 students are needed for the course to go forward).
Tuition & Certification – Tuition for Basic Coastal Cruising depends on the schedule you select.
The weekend In-Harbor course is $790 per person.
The week-day Overnight Adventure is $590 per person (you will also need to book a hotel room or an AirBnB).
The course tuition includes certification for the ASA 103 standard.

If you are an experienced sailor, you can still take this course without ASA 101 certification and not get the 103 certification. However, if you want both the ASA 101 and 103 certifications, there is a $290 add-on to cover the second certification.
