Keel Boat Sailing 2 (ASA 102)

Want to go sailing some more?  ASA 102 will solve that quickly and easily. This will help you build off what you have learned in Basic Sailing.

After Basic Sailing (ASA 101), some students are excited by sailing but not quite ready to jump in all the way by joining the Manhattan Yacht Club and sailing all summer. They want to do a little more sailing, improve their skills and feel more confident about the sport of sailing and our incredible sailing community before joining the Manhattan Yacht Club or signing up for Basic Coastal Cruising.

ASA 102 (Keelboat Sailing 2) solves this.  ASA 102 is an intermediate, on-the-water course designed to build on the basic sailing skills you learned in ASA 101.

ASA 102 focuses on more practice, boat handling skills, sail trim, and helm control in winds up to 20 knots. This certification bridges the gap to Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103). This second level course also allows you to test sailing one more time to see if you love the sailing community as much as you think, and need to make it a full time part of your lifestyle.

Key Course Features & Skills

Advanced Boat Handling- Mainsail up, mainsail down. Hank on the jib, take it off and roll it up. Repetition of these key parts of sailing is the foundation of your sailing. From there, mastering the art of tacking and jibing are second. The more you sail, the better you will get. ASA 102 is a hands-on and ON-WATER course.  Let’s go sailing as much as possible!

Sail Trim – Basic Sailing just covered the points of sail. You learned to sail close-hauled, on a reach and downwind. Next you start learning how to sail on all these points in an efficient and fast manner. ASA 102 focuses on sail shape, power control, twist, and depth adjustments.

Techniques – Sailing is a lifelong process. You get better and better every year. The number of subjects and skills you will learn is almost infinite. ASA 102 will introduce you to more complex subjects like apparent wind sailing, correcting weather helm, and emergency procedures.

Certification – During your course, your instructor will evaluate and help you progress your on-water skills. Then there is also a written exam. Upon successful complete of this course, you will receive the ASA 102 Certification.

Hanging Out at the Manhattan Yacht Club After Sailing

Sailing is more than just a great sport, what makes it so special is the SAILING COMMUNITY. As part of 102, you will also be more exposed to New York Harbor’s largest and most active community of sailors – the Manhattan Yacht Club. So leave time at the end of each course to hang out at the docks, share some food and drink and meet some of the other great sailors. This is an important part of being a great sailors. Sailors often bring down beverages for after sailing and chill them while they are out on the water in the communal cooler which is filled with ice. Then after sailing, teams frequently take turns BBQing on one of the club grills. There are also pizzas available nearby at Tino’s and several restaurants which offer great hamburgers.
