What to Expect & Plan For
This is a real near coastal sailing delivery, not a packaged cruise. That’s exactly what makes it so valuable—and so memorable.
Here’s how it works:
Schedule & Flexibility
The planned route and schedule are outlined above. However, sailing is always subject to weather.
- If conditions are unsafe (for example, strong winds directly on the nose), the captain may delay departure or adjust timing
- Delays can happen before or during the trip
- Safety of the crew and yacht is always the top priority
If a delay occurs, you may:
- Stay and continue with the program, or
- Return home and rejoin when the yacht resumes
Sailing Conditions (The Reality of the Sea)
Whenever possible, we will sail.
However, this is a working delivery, and the yacht must stay on schedule:
- Ideal wind = incredible sailing experience
- Light, strong, or unfavorable wind = engine may be used
Even under power, you will gain valuable experience:
- Steering a 65’ yacht
- Navigation and course management
- Real-world seamanship
There are no refunds for lack of wind or imperfect conditions. This is sailing.
But—if there is a full day with no sailing, you will be invited back for a complimentary 12 Meter sail in New York Harbor.
Hotels & Transportation
Participants are responsible for their own:
- Transportation to/from the program
- Hotel accommodations
- Meals and personal expenses
Typical overnight stops:
- Newport, RI (start)
- Old Saybrook area
- Bridgeport area
Food & Daily Prep
Each sailor is responsible for their own food and drinks while underway.
- You should have time each evening to visit a local store or deli to provision for the next day
- Simple, easy-to-eat meals work best
What to Bring
Spring sailing in the Northeast can be cold—especially on the water.
We recommend:
- Warm layered clothing
- Warm shoes or boots
- Foul weather gear (or waterproof outer layers)
- Hat and gloves (highly recommended)
Water temperatures are still very cold this time of year—dress accordingly.
