Overnight Navigational Adventure on Mega Yacht Arabella

Navigating between New York Harbor and Newport, RI

October 7-9, 2023
Columbus Day Weekend

Our Overnight Navigational Adventure goes between New York Harbor and Newport, RI.

This year, it will be a 3-day & 2-night Adventure over Columbus Day Weekend, October 7-9, 2023.

Manhattan Yacht Club’s flagship “Arabella” travels between New York Harbor & Newport RI every fall. This is an opportunity for students to spend 3 days and 2 nights onboard a mega yacht, discover the adventure of cruising, and standing watch including through the night, navigating and evaluating the weather, currents and sea conditions.

Arabella is a beautiful 157 foot mega yacht with 3 masts. Her sail plan includes a mizzen, genoas, staysails and fishermen. Arabella is a sturdy long distance traveler and has completed dozens of coastal and ocean voyages. You will be gaining valuable experience while still in the safety and comfort of a large mega yacht.

The participation fee for this 3 day adventure ranges from $640 to $840 per person, depending on the level of stateroom.  All staterooms are designed for double occupancy and you can also choose a single supplement for an additional fee.

This Overnight Navigational Adventure begins on Saturday morning, Sept 7.  Students board at 9 am and we expect to get underway by 11 am. The adventure will continue until Monday afternoon when guests depart Arabella.  The cabin fare includes the traditional “Delivery Dinner” on Saturday evening, plus continental breakfasts each morning.  A cabin & bedding will also be provided during the adventure. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the start and finish.

On Saturday morning, Arabella will get underway from New York Harbor and head up the East River and then enter Long Island Sound. She will cruise past the Race which is the area between the North Fork of Long Island and Fishers Island. Then she will continue through Block Island Sound before turning to port at Point Judith and entering Newport Harbor.

This voyage is approximately 140 nautical miles. The duration of the trip will depend on wind and weather. Eighteen hours are budgeted for the trip. This trip will take place within sight of land and mostly on the protected waters of Long Island Sound. On Sunday & Monday, students will be able to explore Newport, including visiting the Mansions, doing the Cliff Walk, seeing the Sailing Museum, and hanging out at some of the famous Newport bars & restaurants. If weather permits on Sunday, we will do a sunset cruise around the harbor.

Start by selecting your cabin. There are 5 options, Owner’s Cabin and Line A, B, C & D.  All cabins have their own private bath and air conditioning.

All cabins are designed for double occupancy. If you wish to have your own private cabin, this can also be arranged for a single supplement which is 1.5 times the single person fare.

There are two Owner’s Cabins, 15 & 16. They are $840 per person ($1,680 per cabin).

Line A is our next highest quality cabin with a queen bed and is $790 per person ($1,580 per cabin).

Line B has a queen bed and is $740 per person ($1,480 per cabin).

Line C has two over/under bunks and is $690 per person ($1,380 per cabin). This is ideal for single people who need a roommate.

Line D is our economy room with a smaller bed for 2 people at $640 per person ($1,280 per cabin).

The Overnight Navigational Adventure is an excellent introduction to the world of overnight passage making. It will help prepare you for longer trips such as our Coastal Adventure between New York Harbor and Annapolis, and our Ocean Adventure between New York, Bermuda, and the British Virgin Islands.

This course is open to Manhattan Sailing School graduates and Manhattan Yacht Club members. Graduates and Members are permitted to bring guests. Space is limited so please sign up soon!

It is recommended that students bring a set of foul weather gear for this adventure as well as handheld VHF radio. This gear as well as many other sailing items can be acquired at West Marine. https://www.westmarine.com/

To follow along the trip and assist with navigation, it is recommended that students download the Navionics app onto their smart phones https://www.navionics.com/usa/apps/navionics-boating?gclsrc=aw.ds.  During the trip, you will be able to see where you are at any time, observe your current speed over ground, plot way points, and estimate times to arrive at various points.
