In NY Harbor, we are fortunate to have some super talented instructors. Many of our instructors are college students from Ireland and other countries. They love coming to our city to sail near the Statue of Liberty. Click on the videos below to met some of our instructors for this coming year.

Barry Mulvey

I am a 21 year old university student at University College Dublin, where I study engineering. I learned to sail at a young age in my home club, the Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin. Since then I’ve sailed a range of boats from toppers, 420s, and catamarans, to J80s, 1720s, and Beneteaus. I now mostly sail Lasers, and also Fireflies with University College Dublin Sailing Club. I sail for the college in intervarsity team racing competitions, and did the same with my high school when I attended. I’ve progressed my skills in sailing by qualifying as an Advanced Instructor, and then Senior Instructor. I’ve gained vast experience by coaching extensively over the last four years in Ireland, Malta, and Canada. I’m very excited to be sailing in New York this summer and I hope to see you on one of our courses!

Joseph Murphy

Born in Dublin, Ireland. I started sailing in the Optimist dinghy when I was ten years old. It was my mom and dad that got me interested in sailing. I still go for a leisurely sail with my dad sometimes. Since starting I have sailed a large variety of sailboat classes, some include, the Mirror dinghy, Fireball, IDRA 14 – a beautiful Irish clinker-built classic racing dinghy, the J24 & J80, as well as most-recently a modified Half-Tonner (MG 30). I have been instructing dinghies and keelboats since 2012, working at a few yacht clubs at home and also out on Shelter Island last summer. I am very excited and looking forward to sailing and instructing at Manhattan Yacht Club – it will be a homecoming of sorts, alongside with my teammates I represented our club, Howth Yacht Club, at the Dennis Connor International Regatta in 2014. Sailing on the Hudson with the Statue of Liberty on one side and the Empire State on the other is an experience that I have yet to beat! It’s incredible.

Ciara Byrne

I am a 21 year old student from Greystones, Ireland and am currently studying Economics & Finance in University College Dublin. I started sailing when I was 9 years old in Greystones Sailing Club and spent my summers doing sailing courses and progressing through my levels. I’ve completed up to and including Level 4 Go Racing, Kites & Wires and Adventure and then went on to get my instructor certificate. I’ve been instructing for 6 years now teaching both children and adults and I absolutely love it! I have loads of experience in different boats having sailed Lasers, RS Feva’s. RS 200’s to name but a few. I enjoy racing over the weekends out of Greystones SC and also The Royal St George Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire during the winter months. I’m really looking forward to coming to Manhattan this summer and sharing my love of sailing with you guys, I’m sure I can teach you loads and we’ll all have an amazing time!

Thomas Nartin

Hi, I’m Thomas and I am a second year science student at Trinity College Dublin. I have been sailing since I was about ten years old and I learned how to sail in optimist dinghies. I am currently sailing a J24 as part of an under-25 team in Howth Yacht Club, on the east coast of Ireland. My job on the boat is trimmer, so I know how to get the boat moving fast. I enjoy sailing the on the J24 because of the team aspect. This year we took part in many different national and regional events all over Ireland and we also competed at the J24 European Championships in Plymouth, England. I have been coaching and instructing both dinghies and keelboats for the past four years, so I have plenty of cool activities to do out on the water! While coaching sailing can sometimes be hard work, I really enjoy it because I find it very rewarding. When I’m not sailing, I enjoy rugby and photography and also using my GoPro! I’m really looking forward to hopefully working in Manhattan this summer and getting the chance to meet all of you guys!
