12 Meter Delivery Adventure

Are you ready to taste some BIG TIME sailing?

12 Meters are the most iconic racing yachts in our country. They were used for the America’s Cup from 1957 to 1987. When they power up, lean over and go, the thrill is incredible. Nothing beats the excitement of sailing aboard an America’s Cup 12 Meter.

Manhattan Sailing School works with the New York Harbor Sailing Foundation to offer graduates this unique “12 Meter Delivery Adventure.” You will get to ride aboard one of the Foundation’s 12 Meters  for 4 days as she travels between Newport, RI and New York Harbor.

At the end of this trip, you will have rocketed your sailing experience forward, and we expect you will have fallen in love with these incredible boats.

The next 12 Meter Delivery Adventure will be June 1, 2, 3 & 4, 2023.

  • Wednesday, May 31 – travel by train after work to Newport RI, sleep in hotel, explore the night life.
  • Thursday, June 1 – Morning & afternoon training sails in Newport, RI, another great night in Newport
  • Friday, June 2 – Newport to Old Saybrook, CT (50 miles)
  • Saturday, June 3 – Old Saybrook to Bridgeport, CT (35 miles)
  • Sunday, June 4 – Bridgeport to New York Harbor (35 miles)

The New York Harbor Sailing Foundation owns two America’s Cup 12 Meters. These are both named “America II” and are US 42 & US 46.  These 12 Meters were part of the NYYC’s 3 boat program for the 1987 America’s Cup in Freemantle, Australia.

These yachts are 65 feet long and pure-bred racing machines. They are also significant pieces of American yachting history. The Foundation has acquired these yachts in order to promote sailing in NY Harbor. These 12 Meters are the flagships of the harbor. There is nothing else like them sailing by the Statue of Liberty every summer.

Qualifications: This adventure is open to Manhattan Sailing School graduates who have completed at least a Basic Sailing Course. Also, these yachts and the delivery are suitable for people who are strong and agile, and in good physical condition. There are no lifelines and moving around the boat requires good balance. This is not a pleasure cruise but instead a delivery which requires active participation.

Entry Fee: $790 per person (these funds help the Foundation maintain and preserve the 12 Meters). There are only 6 spots for students on this trip.

What to bring:  Warm clothing (layers), warm shoes or boots, foul weather gear or other gear which will keep you dry in case of rain. Please remember that in spring, the water temperatures are still very chilly. Each sailor will be responsible for their own food and drinks while sailing. You will have an opportunity to visit a local store or deli the night before, or morning of, each sailing day.

Schedule – The schedule is posted above. This schedule could change based on extreme weather. For example, if the wind is forecast to be 20 knots on the nose, the delivery could be postponed for a day or more before or during the trip at the discretion of the captain. Safety for the crew and the yacht is our #1 concern. If the delivery is postponed, sailors have the option to return home and then rejoin the yacht when she starts up again.

Sailing – Whenever possible within the delivery parameters, the captain will try to sail the 12 Meter. But the 12 Meter must make certain distances and finish at dock within certain times.  The first day from Newport to Old Saybrook is the longest leg of 50 miles. When the wind speed and direction is good, you will have incredible sailing. When winds are too light or too strong, or from the wrong direction, the 12 Meter must continue on schedule by operating the engine. Even under engine power, you will learn a lot and gain great experience steering and navigating. There are no refunds if we do not sail every day or the weather is not perfect. This is sailing. If there are one or more days when you operate under engine only with no sailing, you will be invited for a make-up evening of sailing in New York Harbor.

Hotels & Transportation: Students are responsible for their own hotels and transportation. There are many great hotels in Newport and everyone will stay onshore. Once underway, there will be hotels near the Old Saybrook and Bridgeport areas. Sailors looking to conserve money can bring a sleeping bag and air mattress to sleep onboard. But please keep in mind these yachts are open and if it rains, water drips through the deck. The yachts are also not heated and there are no private bathrooms or showers onboard. Sailors looking for basic comforts are encouraged to book hotel rooms.
